Disability

Disability, this is one of the topics that I did not think I would not be considering for many years. But here I am talking to you about it. Obviously dad is not able to work and earn the normal pay that he has been regularly receiving. Luckily or thoughtfully, he enrolled in short-term and long-term disability insurance. Our family will be able to survive with these payments. My mother is also researching Social Security disability benefits. Every policy has deadlines and specific timeline requirements. Hospital personnel were instrumental with getting all the ducks in a row so that we will not be greatly impacted by the lack of finances. We do not wish to depend on these payments. We are praying for a full recovery, and that he will return to a normal daily life.

As I mentioned before, I am essentially on my own with a full time job now. I feel I can support myself for the remainder of my college career if need be. My parents have not mentioned the “cut off” phrase recently, but during the enrollment process three years ago they promised to support me until graduation. Right now we are just taking it one day at a time.

Apartment Hunting

Since I made the decision to attend law school, I have been hustling to get some important things completed.  Of course I have paid the enrollment deposit and submitted the required paperwork, but there are some things I have to do that do not have to be turned into the law school.  As I have said before, I have lived on campus all four years of my undergraduate career.  I do not have the experience of apartment hunting like so many of my classmates do, which I think puts me at a real disadvantage.  Since I have never done this before, as I said earlier, I called a recommended realtor in the area and part of my spring break was devoted to piling the family in the car and driving to the city where I will be attending law school.  It took all morning to get there (and we left EARLY) and we had appointments in the afternoon.  While I did not see one that was absolutely perfect in every way, our family saw one that stood out more than the others so now we are doing some last minute considerations and will probably go for that one.  One day was a whole lot better than I thought it would be!

Corporate Visits

I am sure anybody that has maintained a job can relate to this topic. So, my supervisor warned my co-workers and me that the high brass officers were visiting today. It made a few people antsy, because we had to perform everything to the T. After a little bit of clean up, we were able to put our best foot forward for the company leaders. My boss was on pins and needles throughout the day, and rejoiced fully when we made it through without any major incidents.

I do not fully understand the motive for the visits, because it interrupts our work schedule to take time for them. The visit was filled with a two hour presentation and a full buffet line lunch. They even gave us free t-shirts in appreciation of our hard work. The tedious presentation was miserable, but I proudly donned the new shirt and devoured a full plate of food. It is nice to place a face and personality to the bigwig profiles. I guess their main visitation purposes were to create a company full of relationships and to present the year’s goals. I plan on filling their influential shoes in the future, so I am taking notes.
